Food Gardens

School food gardens are a true outdoor classroom!

The benefits of growing food on school grounds are numerous, from making highly nutritious snacks available for students, to encouraging children to eat vegetables. Food gardens offer an important life lesson about where food comes from and what it takes to get from seed to table. Gardening at schools can also help to build community and offer many curriculum-related activities.

The Brant Healthy Living Coalition is excited to annouce our new School Food Garden Start Up Program. This program is designed to remove some of the barriers schools experience in starting a food garden such as access to training, tools and resources. Both elementry and secondary schools in Brantford and the County of Brant are elgible to apply.

Please stay tuned for our Call for Applications in September 2008. Up to three schools will be selected as part of our 2008-2009 pilot project. Participating schools will receive:

  • $1,000.00 for tools and supplies
  • Food Garden Toolkit
  • Two on-site consultations with a local gardening expert
